The Long Haul

1/24/26

Learning, developing skills, improving fitness, cultivating relationships, building careers - all of these take time. Our culture constantly sells us on the idea of fast results, rewards without effort, instant gratification. But, if you want something that is truly valuable, you have to be in it for the long haul. Meaningful progress takes time. One could argue that the meaning itself derives from this fact - the more time you take to build something, the more meaningful it will be when you achieve your goals. The journey is what transforms you - - - let the journey be your teacher.

Sometimes progress seems to slow down, halt, or even reverse course. Don't be fooled. Progress will never be perfectly linear, so don't expect it to be and don't be disappointed when it isn't. Be willing to learn as you go - it's OK to adjust your strategy and priorities along the way. Through it all, remain persistent and don't let your mind sabotage you. As David Goggins puts it in his great book Can't Hurt Me, don't allow yourself to indulge in negative self-talk - when that voice of discouragement rises within you, tell it to SHUT UP.

If you are willing to keep moving forward, able to ignore the negative voice in your head, and open to learning as you go - if you are truly in it for the long haul - then the transformation has already begun. The old you is fading out and the new you is coming into focus. Each day is a new chance to continue the journey, and to celebrate the small steps toward meaningful change.
